What the Fix Involves
Once we're on site, the first job is figuring out whether the door is actually off the track or just close to it - those are different repairs. A door that's fully derailed on one side usually means a bent track section or a broken roller, and we don't force it back into place with the opener; that just bends things worse. We disconnect the opener, secure the door, and check both tracks for square against the wall brackets before touching anything else. If the track itself is bent, we straighten or replace the damaged section rather than trying to bang it back true - a track that's been forced back into shape once tends to fail again in the same spot. Then we check every roller on the run, because on a door this age it's rarely just the one that jumped. Worn rollers get replaced as a set on that side, brackets get re-torqued or re-anchored if the wood's chewed out, and we run the door through a full open-close cycle before we call it done. On some of these older setups the spring is also near the end of its life, and we'll flag that separately rather than bundle it into the off-track repair if it isn't the cause.
Doing It Yourself
There's a real limit to what you should try here yourself. If the door is only slightly out of the track and still moves under hand power with the opener disconnected, you can sometimes walk it back into the track channel by hand - carefully, with the door most of the way down, and never while it's under spring tension going up. Past that, stop. A door that's fully off track on a torsion-spring system is under load even when it looks dead still, and trying to force it back or crank the opener to pull it into place is how people lose fingers or drop a 150-pound door on themselves. We won't talk you through re-tensioning a spring or re-hanging a track over the phone, because it's not a phone job.
